White Collar Boxing

Can you imagine what it would be like to stand in the boxing ring with just two other people in that ring? A referee and your opponent.  Seconds before the first bell sounds, the moment of truth. The hard work in the gym and on the road all done. A true test of a your spirit, courage, determination and heart about to take place.

A crowd that includes your family, friends and work colleagues watches on in anticipation. They clap, whistle and roar your name as the bell goes and into battle you go, your adrenaline pumping.

Ask any boxer amateur or professional, novice or champion what this feeling is like and he or she will tell you. It is the most exciting, exhilarating feeling. A fantastic, unique experience that you will never forget.

Why should you miss out on such an amazing opportunity?  The answer to that question is, you don’t have to.

There is a new type of boxing that has recently become popular. This new type of boxing is called ‘White Collar Boxing.’  White Collar Boxing has been thriving in the U.S.A for over a decade now and over the last few years the phenomenom has exploded in the UK, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia.  Now it has come to Canada.

Why is it called White Collar Boxing?

One of the oldest most famous boxing gyms in America is Gleasons Gym, New York City. The story has it that some years ago two Wall Street business types who both fancied themselves as fighters had a bet on who would be still standing if they went three rounds in the ring at the local boxing gym. They employed trainers and set about preparing for this showdown.  Months later they finally got it on at Gleasons in front of a big crowd of colleagues and friends. As it turned out neither had particularly much in the way of pugilistic skills and they both walked away unscathed and with pride intact.

The word spread about these two men that wore suits by day and fought by night, and so, White Collar Boxing was born. It caught on and soon Gleasons had a queue of white collar warriors stretching back to Brooklyn Bridge all wanting a taste of the action.

The contestants, many of whom run leading companys, undergo rigorous training and participate in refereed bouts of three, two minute rounds.  Sixteen ounce gloves, head guards, mouth guards and groin protectors are used for these bouts which are generally non decision so both return to the office the next day to a hero’s welcome, without humiliation. Anyone who steps into the ring in the first place is most certainly a ‘winner’.

The Red Deer Boxing Club has adopted this idea will not limit this opportunity to White Collar workers only.  We believe that boxing is something that all can participate and compete in.  White Collar workers, Blue Collar workers, bank manager or builder, student or unemployed – ALL are welcome.
